Caring for Braided & Oriental Rugs
Many consumers accent their homes with braided rugs or oriental rugs. Some use these costly rugs to protect their carpet from excess wear, while others use them for decoration. In any case, caring for them properly is important.
How do you protect oriental and braided rugs?
To protect the rug from wear, dirt, and prevent it from slipping, purchase a pad to go underneath the rug. On sunny days, close window shades, shutters, or blinds to reduce sun damage. Rotate rugs, and rearrange the furniture so that all parts of the rug will have equal exposure. Regular vacuuming will remove harmful grit.
Inspect the appearance of your rug periodically. If your Oriental rug lacks luster, you should take it in for professional cleaning. In-plant cleaning can usually be done by a carpet cleaning specialist. On braided rugs, inspect and repair areas where the braiding has come apart.
How do you treat stains?
Treat all stains and spills as soon as possible. If spills are left untreated, they may cause the fibers to weaken or become difficult to remove. Remember to test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area before using any kind of stain removal product, and to carefully blot stains with a clean, white towel.
To remove food stains, mix a mild detergent with water and blot the area until the staining material can no longer be transferred to the towel. Rinse, and dry the area by elevating the rug or by using a fan or blow dryer.
To remove oily stains, cover the area with an absorbent powder, let sit, shake off and vacuum.
